Equal opportunities must for women’s upliftment: PM

30 may, kathmandu- Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Sunday pointed out that there should be an equal opportunity for women for their upliftment.

“There is not possibility of the elevation of the society without the upliftment of women. For their elevation, there should be equal opportunities,” he said while inaugurating ‘First National Women Rights Day, 2076’ organised here by the Ministry of Women, Children and Senior Citizen.

Prime Minister Oli ensured that women would get opportunities ahead as the state has adopted the policy of helping women to get to the executive head of the country.

He also viewed that the policy should also be extended to local level, referring to President and Vice President of the country held by woman and man respectively.

The Prime Minister lauded a proportional participation of women in Parliament and parliamentary presidential system despite their dismal participation in the incumbent government.

The government has started celebrating the ‘National Women Rights Day’ from this year under the slogan, ‘End of gender-based discrimination: Destination of prosperous Nepal.”

Om the occasion, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen, Thamamaya Thapa, said that they celebrated the Day as per the government’s decision to observe Jeth 16 as the National Women Rights Day every year with the happiness of four achievements– guarantee of getting citizenship certificate to the children even in the name of mother or father, guarantee of representation of at least one-third women in all bodies of the state, scrapping the discriminatory laws and ending violence against women.

The then lawmaker and current President Bidya Devi Bhandari had tabled the proposal of four issues of women rights in the House on May 30, 2006. The proposal was passed on the same day.

The incumbent government has made arrangement to institutionalize the achievements in the budget of coming fiscal year.

It is believed that the campaign against gender-based violence would help to reduce incidents of domestic violence, rape and thrashing people on the charge of witchcraft. (RSS)
